AZ Licence Requirements in Ontario

Interested in becoming a professional truck driver? To obtain an Ontario Class A (AZ) commercial driver’s licence, applicants must meet specific eligibility, medical, testing, and training requirements.

Basic Eligibility & Medical Requirements

Age Requirement

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for an Ontario Class A licence.

Drivers generally must be at least 21 years old to operate a commercial vehicle across the border into the United States.

Valid Ontario Licence

Applicants must hold a valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence before applying for a Class A licence.

Medical Report

Submit required Ministry of Transportation (MTO) medical report completed by a qualified medical professional. Commercial drivers must meet applicable medical, vision, and hearing standards.

Testing & Training Requirements

Knowledge Test

Applicants must successfully complete the required Class A knowledge test. Drivers seeking an air brake endorsement must also meet the requirements for the Z (Air Brake) endorsement.

103.5-Hour MELT Program

New Class A applicants who are subject to Ontario’s MELT requirements must successfully complete the required 103.5-hour Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program through an approved training provider before attempting the Class A road test.

Class A Road Test & Transmission Types

After completing the required training and other eligibility requirements, students must successfully complete the applicable Class A road test, including the required vehicle inspection and driving components.

|  Note: The type of transmission used for the road test may affect the conditions or restrictions placed on your driver’s licence.
